Lohagad Fort

It is one of the many hill forts of Maharashtra and was with the Maratha Empire for a major period of time. Many dynasties had occupied the fort at different periods of time. It is a favourite with trekkers. You can walk to the top of the fort and it offers a spectacular view. The best time to visit it is during the monsoons. Today, it’s a protected monument by the Government.

It is a group of 22 rock-cut caves dating back to the 2nd century BC. The most impressive monument is the large shrine — chaityagriha — with an open, horseshoe-arched entrance. A notable part of the monument is a group of 14 stupas, five inside and nine outside an irregular excavation.
